A documentary-maker known for her freedom and her commitment in the heart of the Arab world. Throughout her life, Jocelyne Saab (1948-2019) filmed the Middle East with passion but without compromise. Tribute is paid to her filmography, from 10 December 2023, in some ten locations in Paris and Seine-Saint-Denis. A work finding a painful echo in today's current affairs. Artistic director for the 2023 Noisy-le-Sec Franco-Arab Film Festival, Mathilde Rouxel, who knew her well, is behind the initiative to restore her films. Release of a boxed collection of three DVDs, "Jocelyne Saab Cinéaste" and "Le Livre Pour Sortir au Jour" by Jocelyne Saab has been published by Commune.
The writer Sabyl Ghoussoub, 2022 Prix Goncourt des Lycéens for "Beyrouth-sur-Seine", is also associated with the retrospective screening of Jocelyne Saab's films organised for February 2024 in Marseille.
"De Glace et de Feu" (Of Ice and Fire), published by Barzakh, by Suzanne el Kenz, resonates like a long cry of distress and of dreams. A woman (sometimes "she", sometimes "I", sometimes "Hind", sometimes "Mathilde"), confined to a hospital in France, dreams of escaping to the glaciers. A man, Lamour, visits her every day and tries to console her with his poems and gifts. Born in Gaza, the author lived in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Algeria and Tunisia before settling in France.
