Dakar, 20 August 1960. Léopold Sédar Senghor declared Senegal's independence. The man who would become the first president negotiated with General de Gaulle. Most of France's former African colonies followed suit. Officially, it was a day of liberation. Unofficially, it was also the start of La Françafrique.
