COP 24 will take place this year in Katowice, Poland, from 3rd to 14th December 2018. For this occasion we are showing some TV5MONDE special programming focussing on the environment.
COP 24: the programme of the year
Environment Minister Jan Szyszko underlined the reasons for the choice of the city of Katowice: "The entire Upper Silesia and Zagłębie region is a shining example of what can be achieved through sustainable development policy and economic transformation".
The COP includes the Paris Agreement on Climate Change 2015 and the Tokyo Protocol 1997. The ultimate objective of all these treaties is to stabilise greenhouse gas concentrations to prevent a disruption of the climate system and allow ecosystems to adapt naturally.
Thus COP 24 will include:
- The 24th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention (COP 24)
- The 14th Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP14)
- The 3rd part of the 1st session of the Conference of the Parties to the Paris Agreement (CMA1). The aim will be to finalise the rules for implementing the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
- The 49th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI)
- The 7th part of the first session of the Ad Hoc Working Group of the Paris Agreement (ABS 1-7)
Calendar of significant events:
4th December: Meeting on global climate action;
10th December: Part of the assessment of implementation and ambitions before 2020;
10th December: Third Ministerial Dialogue on Climate Finance under the theme "Translating Climate Finance Needs into Action";
11th December: Political phase of the Talanoa dialogue with ministerial round tables.
Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change said: "2018 will also be an important year for international climate diplomacy, as nations move towards the implementation of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. 2018 should indeed be the year in which governments will take a number of key steps"
